LESSON ON THE THEME: 'MY FRIEND'

 

                                              Lesson 2                                  

                                                              

T.: Today we shall speak about our friends. We’ll speak about their appearance, occupations, interests, moral values, hobbies.

WARMING-UP

a)  Morning greeting

T.: Now you’ll have your everyday morning greeting. Find classmates who was born in the same

    season as you and make a circle with them. Greet each other saying something pleasant. Don’t

    repeat the same greeting.

    Possible greetings

-         Hello! Glad to see you because you are my best friend.

-         So do I.  I consider you are my loyal (true, real) friend too.

-         Good morning! Nice to meet you!

-         Oh, my dear friend! Happy to see you too!

-         Haven’t seen you for ages! How are you?

-         I’m fine, thank you! Fancy meeting you here, etc.

 b) Listen, read and repeat a poem:

BE MY FRIEND

Take my hand and walk with me,

Be my friend and talk to me,

We can talk of many things,

How we feel when a songbird sings.

We’ll talk quietly, not shout,

There is so much to talk about:

How we help our mummies too,

They have so much work to do.

Take my hand and walk with me,

Be my friend and talk to me.

VOCABULARY EXPANSION

a) Read the following adjectives. Guess what they mean. Match the Ukrainian translation to their English equivalents.

Decent, selfish, fair, naughty, faithful, envious, kind-hearted, proud, noble, boastful, good natured, greedy, honest, attentive, truthful, generous, cowardly, rude, courageous, mean, lazy, fearless, careless.

Відвертий, егоїстичний, справедливий , вередливий, вірний, заздрісний, добрий, пихатий (гордовитий), благородний, хвастливий, доброї вдачі, жадібний, чесний, уважний, правдивий,

великодушний (щедрий), боягузливий, грубий, відважний, підлий (скупий), лінивий, безстрашний, легковажний.

 

b) Make separate lists of good and bad qualities of people. Your lists might begin like this:

fair                                               naughty, etc.

 c) Say:

- What qualities you hate;

- What qualities you would like to develop in yourself and see in your friends;

- What kind of people you admire.

 d) Complete the sentences:

-  It is difficult to make friends when...

 SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

Ask the pupils to work in pairs.

a) Discuss with your partner the rules of making friends.

b) Tell your partner about your best friend using the plan:

1. Name

2. Age

3. Appearance

4. Moral values

5. Hobbies

6. Your thoughts about your friend  

 READING ACTIVITIES 

Read the text which will help you to discuss conceptions of friendship and comradeship.

                                   Friendship is a very great thing

     Do you remember the English proverbs about friendship which you have discussed already? Here they are: “A friend in need is a friend indeed”,  “A good friend is the sun in winter”,  “A friend is easier lost than found”,  “A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody”.

     Friendship is a very great thing and that’s why people of all countries have so many proverbs about it. As you do not know all English proverbs about friends and friendship, here are some more. Take, for example, this one: “A friend is never known till a man has need”.                       

     What does it mean? It means that the best friend is the one who helps you when you are really  in need of help. You know your real friends when you are in a difficult situation.

      The second proverb is “A friend is not so soon gotten as lost”. The meaning of this proverb  is that it takes a long time to become really friendly with somebody. But there are many ways of  quickly losing a friend if you do something wrong. So you must try to keep a friendship.

      Another English proverb is “Before you make a friend, eat a bushel of salt with him’.

     Of course, you need not eat much salt to become good friends but you must know your friend  very well. If you help each other and do useful and important things together, your friendship will  last a very long time.    

       The words “friendship” and “comradeship” are very close to each other in meaning. Friends   and comrades may have the same interests; they understand, help, respect and trust each other.

Questions for discussion:

1. What English proverbs about friendship do you remember?

2. In what way can you learn to know your real friends?

3. How long have you know your real friend? What sort of boy (girl) is he (she)?

4. Have you ever helped someone with his/her school work? Have those pupils become your comrades

    (friends)?

5. What will you do if a boy (girl) comes up to you and says, “I should like you to be a friend with

      me”?

6. An English proverb says: “When a friend asks, there is no tomorrow”. You will certainly do

   everything for your friend when he/she is in need of help. What are the situations in which help  

   must be given as soon as it is asked for? (When something cannot be done without outside help;

    when it is impossible to put off a job till tomorrow; when the interests of the collective come first;

    when you  promised to do something).

7. One of your classmates said, “My friend and I go about everywhere together”. What else must

     they do to be good friends? (To understand and trust each other: to take part in useful activities.)

8. One of your classmates always looks after his own interests and so nobody wants to be friends  

    with him/her. Discuss how that boy/girl can be helped. (By given him a book about those who

    worked and fought for the people; by trying to make him/her more active in school life; be giving

    him/her examples how he/she can be useful to the collective.)

 9. Say what you think about the following English proverb: “He is a good friend that speaks well of

     us behind our backs”. (It is better to say pleasant things about your friend when he is not there;

     a real friend must be always sincere; people are more likely to believe you when you speak well of

     your friend when he can’t hear what you are saying).

10. People say that a friend in need is a friend indeed. But there is another opinion: a friend in joy is

      also a real friend. What do you think? (He is always glad to hear good news about his friend; his

      friend’s joy is his own joy; he is the first to congratulate a friend; he rejoices sincerely with his

      friend.)

 11. “There are no friends like old friends”, as the old English song goes. Describe an old friend of 

        yours. (I believe everything he tells me; he is a good friend to his classmates; when he criticizes

        somebody he does it openly; he never said “tomorrow’ when I asked him to help).  

  GROUP WORK 

T.: a) Work in groups of fours and write down your ideas concerning a loyal friend and real

            friendship.

       b) Represent your ideas to the class.                   

 HOME ASSIGNMENT

a) Write a story about your best friend.
