THEME: “RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PEOPLE: FRIENDSHIP”

                                 

       Level: B1 (intermediate)   

 

                    OBJECTIVES:

 Practical     - to practice pupils in different language skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing)

                        using various interactive forms of activity (pair and group work, brainstorming, project

                        work, etc.); to expand pupils’ vocabulary on the theme “Relationship between people:

                        friendship”; to involve them in participation into International and All-Ukrainian

                        Pupils’ Projects “Repairing Friendship”;

Educational - to extend the pupils’ knowledge of poems and proverbs about friendship and

                        comradeship between people and to acquaint them with International Pupils’ Project

                        “Repairing Friendship”;

Developing  - to develop their critical thinking, creativity and their reciting and communicative

                        skills;

Upbringing - to teach the pupils to be tolerant to each other, to respect and appreciate friendship and

                       friends they have.                             

 

                                                Lesson 1

                      ‘FRIENDSHIP IS A VERY GREAT THING’

INTRODUCTION

       T.: Today I’m going to start discussing with you a very urgent issue, the issue of such relationship between people as friendship. During our next four lessons we’ll learn new poems and proverbs, read and listen to interesting texts about friendship, speak and write about your friends. We’ll do a lot of various activities working in pairs, groups and individually.

           I’ll also tell you about International and All-Ukrainian Pupils’ Projects “Repairing Friendship”         and we’ll be preparing to our own participation in them.

           Slogan of our work will be: “Friendship is a great thing, cherish and treasure it!”

           I greatly hope that you’ll enjoy our lessons on this theme. I think that activities, which we       are going to fulfill, will be interesting and useful for you. They will extend your outlook, deepen        your knowledge and develop your language skills, critical thinking and creativity.          . 

1. Warming-up

a. Listen to the poem “Friendship” by Edith Segal and say how you understand the author’s words about friendship.

                        “Friendship is a thing for two,

                          Three or four, even more.

                          Like a song that’s made to sing

                          Friendship is a doing thing”.

b. Divide in groups of 4. Take pieces of large papers and markers. Fulfill the following tasks:

- Define what you think the word ‘friendship’ means on a piece of paper through words, pictures, etc.

- Present your piece of paper with your definitions to the rest of the class.

 

2. Classroom Poster Activity

a. Walk around the classroom and answer 5 questions posted on the walls:

1. Do you have a friend? Who is your friend?

2. Do you like being with your friend? Why?

3. What do you like to do together with your friend?

4. Does your friend always understand and help you?

5. Do you always understand and help your friend?

 

 3. Vocabulary Expansion

a) The teacher presents a new vocabulary (friendship, to understand, to respect, to trust, to help, loyal, thoughtful) and checks pupils’ pronunciation by having them repeat back the words.

b) The game “Find a partner».

    Some of pupils will get words, the others – definitions of these words. They should find a partner matching the definitions with the words.

    List of words and definitions:

1. A friend                    a. a relationship or a state of friendliness between two people who like each 

                                      other

2. Friendship                 b. someone who you know well and like, but who is not related to you

3. To understand         c. to have a good opinion of someone’s character or ideas

4. To respect               d. to know how someone feel and why he behaves in the way that he does

Pre-reading tasks

Read the text and be ready to answer the question: Are Lucy and Betty real friends?

                                ONLY WHEN IT DOESN’T RAIN

      Betty and Lucy are friends. They are the pupils of the second form. They often play, walk and go to school together.

      One day the two girls were in the street when it began to rain. Lucy had a raincoat on, and Betty was wearing only her school dress.

       “Take off your raincoat. Let’s put it on our two heads”, Betty said.

       “I can’t. I don’t want to get wet. It is my raincoat!” Lucy answered.

       When they came to school the teacher looked at both girls and said, “Betty’s dress is wet and Lucy’s dress is not wet. How’s that? Weren’t you together?”

        “Yes, we were together,” Betty answered, “but Lucy had a raincoat and I hadn’t a raincoat”.

        “Why didn’t you put Lucy’s raincoat on your two heads?” the teacher asked.

        The girls did not answer.

        And then the teacher said, “I see, you are friends only when it doesn’t rain”.

 Post-reading task

Say, how you would do if you were in Lucy’s place. Use the expressions:

Pre-listening tasks

Brainstorming Make a word map. Which words and expressions do you associate with the notion “friendship”? What is friendship based on?  SHAPE  \* MERGEFORMAT

Friendship is based on

Helping each other in difficult situations

Doing pleasant things to each other

Respecting and trusting each other

Mutual understanding of each other

Doing useful and important things together and spending much time together/meeting often

Having much in common: the same interests, common tastes, opinions

Treating each other kindly: to be attentive and ready to help

  While-listening task

 Listen to the text and write down all proverbs about friendship mentioned in it.

                                   If you want to have a friend...

      Let us suppose that everybody here in this group has a good friend. Friendship between two people grows when they do something useful together and when they have the same interests. Their

friendship is still better if they understand each other well.

       There is such an English proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. Nobody can live without friends. I guess you agree that real friends are always ready to help each other. I hope that you also agree that the real friendship is possible only when people respect and trust each other.

       So you can see that friendship between two people is a very great thing. As English people say, “A good friend is as the sun in winter”. A good proverb, isn’t it? A real friend makes your life happier and more interesting. He is dear to you and you want your friendship to last for a very long time.

       Well, there are some other English proverbs about friendship and friends. Take, for example, this one: “A friend is easier lost than found”. What does it mean? It means that it is difficult to find

 a good friend. You may lose a friend quickly if you do something wrong. Always think how to keep friendship.

        And there is another thing which is no less important: if you want to have a friend, you have to be good friends yourselves.

4. What is real friendship in your opinion?

 Summing-up

Thus, we have spoken about friendship today. I hope you have realized that friendship is a great thing.

Nobody can live without loyal friends. But if you want to have a friend you must be good friends yourselves. It is easier to break friendship than to make friendship. Sometimes a misunderstanding can stop friendship. Mind it.
